Not much, and more than you would think. Here is what to expect before you say yes.
You do not need to know anything
Every planting day starts with somebody showing you how deep to set a sapling and how far apart it goes. If you have never planted a tree, you are exactly who these days are for.
It all goes in on one day
A Miyawaki forest is not planted a row at a time. Ground cover, shrubs, medium trees and canopy trees go into the ground together, which is why it takes a crowd and not a crew.
Bring gloves and closed shoes
Expect soil, mulch and a few hours on your knees, and expect to leave with dirt on you.
Children are welcome
At Temple Shalom the forest was planted around an outdoor classroom, by the people who would go on to use it. Younger hands work well at ground cover height.
